MacBook Air
Overview
Another Macbook? Not in the traditional sense...
It's hard to keep up with Apple sometimes. Our childlike excitment at the iPhone, OS X Leopard and the new iPod Touch has barely started to calm down yet and they go and announce another explosive release - The MacBook Air.
The new MacBook Air is thin. Very thin. In fact it's claimed to be the world's thinnest laptop - Steve Jobs literally pulled it from a manilla envelope on the official launch! It's also chock full of high spec features such as 2GB RAM, Core 2 Duo processor and built in i-Sight webcam, and of course the MacBook Air is absolutely dripping with style.
MacBook Air - Design
Did we already mention how thin the MacBook Air is? Well it's probably worth repeating it... at a size 0 it ranges from just under 2cm at its thickest point to a mindblowing 4mm at it's thinnest! The standard model weighs 1.3kg and sports an uncompromised 13.3inch widescreen. An intelligent backlit keyboard is a welcome addition to the MacBook range - great for trains, planes and graveyard shifts. The built-in sensor illuminates the keyboard at different brightnesses depending on the ambient light, thereby saving battery too.
The touch-control design that proved itself so intuitive on the iPhone and iPod Touch is now available via the MacBook Air touch-pad: you can rotate, zoom, pinch, swipe, flip and more.
Key Features
MacBook Air - Features
Apple seem to be leading the way with wireless connectivity - starting with the fastest-available, next-generation 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR built in. So confident are they in the future of wireless technology that they have removed the optical drive completely! That's right, no CD/DVD! Instead the MacBook Air wirelessly hijacks the optical drive of a friendly, nearby PC or Mac via 'Remote Disc' - This is going to ruffle some feathers in the industry but you can bet many other laptop manufacturers will follow suit pretty soon. Backup is done via wireless Time Machine and Time Capsule, and you can wirelessly migrate your entire existing Mac system setup and files to the new MacBook Air
And 80GB hard drive comes as standard but here's the really cool part - should you want to, you can upgrade to a 64GB solid-state hard drive! That means no spinning motors or moving parts which in turn should translate to less drain on the battery and less heat. You can also choose between a 1.6 or 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo processor. The battery life is stated at 5 hours but this will depend on your configuration and how hard you make your MacBook Air work.
