Product Review for product My Book World Edition WDH1NC10000 - NAS server

I have now purchased 3 of these drives so I am very impressed with this product. One of these I am using at home and the other two are being used for business purposes. A few small things which are slightly annoying but once you are up and running every thing seems to run really smoothly.

First annoying thing is Western Dig only provide a very small networking cable in the box for the drive, 1 metre cable is just not longer enough for any one.

The other annoying thing is for my home environment I am using Windows Vista. As soon as I plugged the drive into the network the drive gave itself an icon in the "my computer" area and double clicking I would have thought it would display the folder structure ready for me to access the public folders. As WIndows does with your C: drive or DVD ROM drive. This icon is a shortcut to the website for setting the drive up. This is okay if you do not know the network address of the drive. However you now have to actually add a mapped network drive to your computer using the \\192.168.1.xxx\%drivesharename% (drive ip address) to view the file structure. This was one of these occasions where I thought I knew best and would not read the instructions but then realised you have to setup the drive before use as you only have read access to the public folder structures.

If unlike me you actually read the instructions setup is easy, the device is already DHCP enabled, which means once powered up, network cable plugged in (a longer one) a network address is auto assigned. You can get this address from your broadband router. (refer to your broadband router instructions for this)

For my home use I have copied movies and photos to this drive as well as bbc iplayer downloads. The drive is connected hard wired via patch cable to my home network and then I use my laptop in another room to connect wirelessly to the router / drive to stream the movies. This works brilliantly, no lag, no delay or jumping movie playback. I have even tried HD content, 720 and 1080 work brilliant. My router at home is a standard 802.11G network so not even the latest N draft range and yet HD content streams from the drive with no problems.

The software that gets shipped with the drive is also not too bad, if following the user guide then a lot of pictorial representation is given for setup as well as easy to use icons whilst connected to the drives default software. Usernames and Passwords on folder shares can be setup so various users and groups can be restricted for read only access or even no access.

The drive has a usb port on the rear which is not for computer connection but for another drive to connect thus giving double the capacity via one networking cable or settting the drive up as a mirror device for extra protection against file loss.

Mionet also ship some software with this drive which allows you to register for free on their website and with the aid of a free downloadable internet explorer active x control you can access your shared folders from any computer connected to the internet. Thrown in is a 30 day trial of full remote accessing your computer, which is good but not worth the monthly cost. Accessing the drive was all I was after and that works really well for viewing photos. Remember though the bigger the photo size on the drive the longer its going to take to load via the internet connection so you could setup two folders one for fast browsing and another with the originals.

My overall inpression is great and I am looking forward to larger size drives with a good price tag being available in the future.
